Iowa Football: QB Sokol, DB Lile no longer with the Hawkeyes

The University of Iowa confirmed what many already knew Monday when Sports Information Director Steve Roe sent out an email stating that third-string quarterback Cody Sokol had decided to transfer to Louisiana Tech.

The news that was unfamiliar to Hawkeye Nation was that redshirt freshman defensive back Ruben Lile also was transferring.

Lile, a native of Detroit, Mich., was a redshirt freshman in 2013. He saw action in three games, recording one solo tackle.

"Ruben expressed a desire to transfer closer to home, and we will do all we can to help him with his request," said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.

Sokol came to Iowa by way of Scottsdale Community College and was involved in a heated battle for the starting quarterback position in camp last fall after redshirting in 2012.

Sophomore Jake Rudock eventually became the starter, and redshirt freshman C.J. Beathard became the primary backup, bringing about speculation that Sokol may leave the program in the offseason. Sokol saw action in Iowa’s 38-17 win over Nebraska but did not attempt a pass.

"Cody has been a tremendous team member and we appreciate all his efforts on the teams' behalf,” said Ferentz. “Cody is a very good quarterback, and we wish him the best at Louisiana Tech."

The Hawkeyes begin spring practice March 26. Iowa will hold an open practice at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12 and conclude spring practice with the spring game in Kinnick Stadium at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
