The Iowa football team has its first commitment of the 2015 season despite losing the season opener Saturday for the first time since 2000.
West Lyon junior lineman Jake Newborg gave his verbal commitment to the Hawkeyes this weekend during the team’s 2013 opener against Northern Illinois, a game Iowa eventually lost 30-27 on a last-second field goal. Newborg made the announcement on his Twitter page.
Newborg is listed as 6-foot-4, 270 pounds by scout.com and 6-foot-2, 271 pounds by rivals.com. He will come into Iowa in a few years and either play offensive guard or defensive tackle.
Iowa issued Newborg a scholarship offer during its summer camp. Newborg was picked as a third-team al-stater as a sophomore last year by the Iowa Newspaper Association.
Newborg’s only know Division I scholarship offer came from Iowa but Iowa State had shown some interest.
