Iowa senior defensive back B.J. Lowery turned heads around college football this past weekend when he returned two interceptions for touchdowns against Western Michigan at Kinnick Stadium.
For that effort, Lowery was named the Jim Thorpe Defensive Back of the Week on Wednesday. The announcement was made by the Jim Thorpe Association.
Lowery also had four tackles on the day. His first pick 6 was a 35-yarder with 56 seconds left in the second period. His second interception of the day came on Western Michigan’s first pass of the second half and gave Iowa a 45-3 lead.
The Ohio native is the first Iowa Hawkeye to ever record two interception returns for touchdowns in the same game and the second Big Ten player to accomplish the feat since 1998. Lowery has three picks in Iowa’s last two games.
The Hawkeyes (3-1) begin Big Ten Conference play on Saturday when they travel north to take on the Minnesota Gophers (4-0). The game is for Floyd of Rosedale, which currently resides in Iowa City. Kick off is set for 2:36 p.m.
