Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz announced today that Sioux City Bishop Heelan standout Michael Malloy will have to earn his scholarship at the university if he wants to play football for the Hawkeyes.
Malloy was given a full scholarship when he committed to the program this past summer but then was arrested on August 8 for several charges, including possession or use of drug paraphernalia.
It has not been stated or confirmed but the fact that four-star running back Greg Garmon just committing to the Hawkeyes likely played a factor in the coaching staff's decision.
Malloy has to walk on the first season at Iowa if he wants to play football in Iowa City. If he does well, he has the chance earn the scholarship back in year two. Malloy's only other scholarship offer came from South Dakota, and he will visit Vermillion on Jan. 21. There is no insight on if Malloy will play for South Dakota or start at Iowa as a walk on.
The Crusaders star was suspended the first two games of the season following the charges and then tore his ACL in his second game back and missed the rest of the season.
The charges included possession or use of drug paraphernalia, obstructing an officer, second-degree criminal trespassing and operating a vehicle without lights. He pleaded guilty to obstructing an officer, a misdemeanor, and the other three charges were dropped.
Malloy rushed for 1,668 yards as a senior this past season at Sioux City Heelan. He also scored 29 touchdowns.
Iowa now only has 17 committed players who have been offered scholarships. Ferentz said he would like to have 22 scholarship players this recruiting season.
Former Cedar Rapids Washington star will join Hawkeyes as a walk on
Andre Dawson, a former prep star with Cedar Rapids Washington, has decided to join Iowa's football program as a walk-on.
Dawson rushed for 2,212 yards and 28 TDs during his season senior at Washington. He rushed for 1,485 yards and 27 TDs as a junior.
He originally committed to Northern Iowa but attended Iowa Western Community College this past season. Dawson finished third on the team in rushing -- trailing Iowa recruit Rodney Coe (470 yards and nine TDs) -- with 263 yards and three scores.
Coe did not qualify this past offseason to attend Iowa but hopes to still play Division I football. It is believed that Coe also is still interested in the Hawkeyes.
