Iowa junior Damon Bullock is not expected to be the No. 1 tailback for the Hawkeyes this season. But he was named to the 2013 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List on Thursday.
The award will be presented to the nation’s top offensive player of the year, who meets the criteria of being born in Texas, graduating from a Texas High School or playing at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
Bullock, a native of Mansfield, Texas, played in six games last year and missed another six with an injury. The junior running back rushed for 150 yards in his first start against Northern Illinois a season ago and has totaled 533 rushing yards and 178 receiving yards in his career.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Selection Committee consists of Texas-based journalists, collegiate football dignitaries and each of the subsequent all-time winners of the award.
A player of the week will be selected by the committee each week of the regular season leading up to the announcement of the awards finalists in December.
The committee will trim the field to 16 semifinalists on Nov. 18, and as many as four finalists on Dec. 2. The winner will be announced and recognized at a banquet on Jan. 10, 2014.
Iowa kicks off the season on Saturday, Aug. 31, hosting Northern Illinois at newly re-vamped Kinnick Stadium. That game kicks off at 2:42 p.m. and can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
