The nationally ranked University of Iowa field hockey team continues to make headlines.
Three Hawkeye hockey players – Karli Johansen, Niki Schultheis and Marike Stribos – are Big Ten Field Hockey Players to Watch, the conference announced Thursday.
Johansen, a Canada native, has started 44 of her 49 career games and was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team as a sophomore and junior. She also was one of eight Big Ten field hockey standouts named to the watch list last year and was selected to the Canadian Women’s National Team in April.
Schultheis is a senior from Germany who enters her fourth season as a starter. She started all 21 matches and posted a career-high 10 assists in 2012. That assist number also was second on the team and Schultheis also is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and three-time NFHCA National Academic Squad member.
Stribos is another international Hawkeye, coming to Iowa City from Brussels, Belgium. She has played in 58 career matches for Iowa and started 57 of them. As a junior last season, Stribos was named a Longstreth/NFHCA first team West Region all-American and a second-team all-Big Ten selection. Stribos also is a two-time all-Big Ten Academic honor and three-time NFHCA National Academic Squad member.
The Hawkeyes will host Missouri State in their final exhibition at noon Sunday. Iowa opens the regular season in Easton, Pennsylvania, against Bucknell on Aug. 30 and Lafayette College on Sept. 1. The home opener is Sept. 7-8 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Hawkeyes face Wake Forest on Sept. 7 and North Carolina on Sept. 8.
