Since Sept. 6, 2011, the Iowa field hockey team has been ranked in the top 25 national poll. That’s 22 straight weeks.
The streak was extended this week when the Hawkeyes jumped into the preseason poll with a No. 13 national ranking by the 2013 Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I preseason poll. Iowa gained 344 points in the rankings.
“We are ready for a challenging season to begin this weekend,” said UI head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Our mindset is to take it one day at a time and the results and polls will take care of themselves.”
There are three other Big Ten schools in the national rankings besides Iowa. Penn State begins the season sixth, Michigan is ninth and Northwestern starts 11th. The Hawkeyes will play seven opponents in the top 20 this season.
“We have seven of the top 20 teams in the preseason poll on our schedule, and many others who are close to breaking into that elite group,” said Griesbaum.
Iowa will begin its run to another national tournament Friday when it travels to Easton, Penn. The Hawkeyes will play Bucknell on Friday and Lafayette College on Sunday. The home schedule begins Sept. 7-8 as they host the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge against Wake Forest and North Carolina.
