With 18 games remaining in the 2013 season, the Iowa Cubs are still in the hunt for the division title. Iowa currently stands in third place, four games behind the division leading Omaha Storm Chasers and two games behind the second-place Memphis Redbirds.
Iowa opens a five-game series with the New Orleans Zephyrs on Friday in New Orleans. Iowa won one of three games in New Orleans July 8-10. Iowa has not played well on the road in 2013, compiling a record of 20-43.
The teams Iowa trails, Omaha and Memphis play each other in a weekend series so Iowa stands to gain ground on someone if they can defeat the Zephyrs.
The final homestand of the season for the I-Cubs will be a big one. Iowa hosts Memphis for five games and Omaha for four before traveling to Nashville to finish the season with four games against the last place Sounds.
Reports on Friday morning indicate the I-Cubs may be getting some help on offense. Brian Bogusevic has been rehabbing in Arizona in an effort to return to the Chicago Cubs after suffering a left hamstring strain. Bogusevic was placed on the disabled list on July 15. If Bogusevic continues his rehab in Des Moines, he would greatly help a line-up that has suffered to consistently score runs. Bogusevic played in 78 games with Iowa before being called up by Chicago earlier this year. While with Iowa, Bogusevic hit .319 with 10 HR and 32 RBI.
