Most polls see the outcome as a tossup, with Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum in a tough race for first place and Newt Gingrich beginning to run with a limp.

Whether the results of political activity in one state should be such a large factor in which candidate, ultimately, will earn the GOP presidential nomination is open to debate. What is obvious, however, is all political eyes will be on Tuesday's caucus results and it will probably mean the end of the road for one or more candidates who finish near the bottom.

Survivors of the Iowa Caucus will compete next in the Jan. 10 New Hampshire primary.

The remaining contests in January are in South Carolina on Jan. 21 and Florida on Jan. 31.

The latest nationwide sampling of Republicans by the Gallup Poll show Romney in front with 26 percent, Gingrich with 24, Paul with 11, Rick Perry with 7, Michele Bachmann and Santorum with 5 each, John Huntsman with 2 and others favored by 3.

The poll also showed President Barack Obama edging Romney, 50-48.
