Iowa Basketball: Logic moves into record books, Hawk women crush Illinois

Iowa junior Sam Logic took over the top spot on Iowa's all-time leading assists chart Sunday when she dished out five assists in the Hawkeyes' easy win over Illinois. Logic, who is just a junior, now has 577 career assists.

Iowa junior point guard Samantha Logic moved herself into sole possession of first place on the program's all-time assists list Sunday during the Hawkeye women's basketball team's easy win over Illinois.

Logic was one of four Hawkeyes in double-figures but her five helpers moved her past Cara Consuegra's 576 career assists as the 25th ranked Hawkeyes drubbed the Fighting Illini, 81-56, at the State Farm Center.

Logic finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while lone senior Theairra Taylor had a game-high 17 points, four rebounds and five assists. Logic now has 577 career assists.

"What is impressive is whose record she took over," Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said. "Cara Consuegra was an outstanding point guard; for Sam to surpass her with a year remaining is an amazing statistic."

Freshman Ally Disterhoft also scored 14 points and had six rebounds, while junior Bethany Doolittle chipped in 11 points and three blocks as the Hawkeyes locked up the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.

Iowa is now 23-7 on the season and it finished 11-5 in Big Ten Conference play, which was good for a tie with Purdue. The Boilermakers hold the tiebreaker after a two-point win over Iowa earlier this season.

Against Illinois, the outcome was never in doubt. The game was tied once and the lead changed hands twice in the first minute but Taylor's 3-pointer put the Hawkeyes up 5-4 and Iowa never trailed again.

Iowa led 40-22 at the half and led by as many as 35 in the second half.

The Hawkeyes have won at least 20 games in six of the last seven games and the 23 wins this season is tied for the most under Bluder. The 2004-05 team also won 23 games.

Iowa also has won three straight, 9-of-11 and 11-of-14 since starting 0-2 in league play.

Amber Moore, who was the only senior honored for Illinois' Senior Day on Sunday, led the Fighting Illini (9-20, 2-14) with 14 points, while Ivory Crawford had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Illinois hit seven 3-pointers in the game but was just 7-of-14 from the line. Iowa was 11-of-27 from long range and made 16-of-20 from the line.

These two teams will meet again in the first round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Iowa leads the all-time series with Illinois 51-17, has won eight of the last nine games at Illinois and beaten the Fighting Illini 16 of the last 18 in all.

The Hawkeyes beat Illinois, 69-55, in the season's first meeting back in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 13.

"Hopefully we'll go in with a lot of confidence knowing that we swept them during the year," Bluder said. "Twenty-three (wins) sounds really good, but 24 sounds a lot better."

The Big Ten Tournament will be televised by BTN, and the Hawkeyes are 9-0 on that network this season.
