The University of Iowa women’s basketball team will have plenty of new faces on its roster this season, but one returner will be point guard Samantha Logic, and the Hawkeye junior has been named to the preseason all-Big Ten team by the league’s media, the Big Ten Conference announced Thursday.
“I am thrilled for Sam to get this preseason recognition,” said UI head coach Lisa Bluder. “Although it will not mean much to her, it means a lot to our program in that we are in capable hands with our floor general. She led the entire Big Ten in assists last year and also ranked in the top 15 in the country. Sam does so many things for us, even nontraditional point guard skills such as rebounding.”
Logic was a McDonald’s All-American coming out of high school in Wisconsin. She started all 34 games last year and was a third-team all-Big Ten selection after she set the school record for assists in a season with 217.
Logic also collected five double-double and led the Big Ten in the assists per game at 6.4. That number also was 15th in the nation.
Penn State’s Maggie Lucas garnered Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year accolades from the coaches and media.
Minnesota’s Rachel Banham, Nebraska’s Jordan Hooper, Purdue’s Courtney Moses and Lucas were all preseason all-Big Ten selections by both the media and the coaches. Logic’s selection was from the media, while Michigan State’s Clarissa Bell was selected by the coaches.
In addition, the Nebraska Cornhuskers were selected as the preseason conference favorites by both voting panels. Penn State and Michigan State were selected second and third, respectively.
Iowa -- the only Big Ten team to appear in the last six NCAA Tournaments -- hosts Concordia-St. Paul in an exhibition Sunday at 1 p.m. before opening the regular season in the Hawkeye Challenge on Nov. 8 against UC Riverside (6 p.m.).
