Iowa Baseball: Hawks lose three games in South Carolina

The Iowa baseball team is now 1-5 this season after dropping three games at the 13th Annual Caravelle Resort Baseball at the Beach Tournament.

The Hawkeyes lost to Coastal Carolina, 1-0, got blasted by George Mason, 12-3 and then suffered a tough 4-3 loss to Virginia Tech in the final game Sunday. All three games were played in South Carolina near Myrtle Beach.

Coastal Carolina 1, Iowa 0

Jarred Hippen suffered the tough-luck loss for Iowa as he allowed just one run on three hits and struck out five in seven and one-third innings pitched. Tyler Herb earned the win for Coastal Carolina, while Ryan Connolly earned the save.

The Hawkeyes stranded runners at second and third in the eighth. They had three hits and three errors in the game.

George Mason 12, Iowa 3

Sean Flanagan hit a solo home run but it was not near enough as George Mason scored four runs in the third and fve more in the fifth in the win.

Matt Dermody took the loss for Iowa as he allowed seven runs on eight hits in three and one-third innings. Andrew Hanse was one of three true freshmen to make their first appearance on the mound. Hanse pitched three scoreless innings and struck out four.

Ryan Rumpf had an RBI in the eighth and scored a run in the second for Iowa, which is now 1-5 this season.

Ryan Pfaeffle got the win for George Mason.

Virginia Tech 4, Iowa 3

The Hawkeyes led 3-0 after seven innings, but the Hokies scored one run in the eighth and won it with three more runs in the ninth.

Sasha Kuebel threw another gem for Iowa as he allowed one run on three hits in seven and one-third innings. Tim Fangman took the loss for the Hawkeyes.

Mike McQuillan had two hits and two stolen bases to lead Iowa, while Jake Yacinich -- who was one of three true freshmen starting for Iowa -- had two hits at the plate, as well.

Freshman Kris Goodman doubled and scored a run, while freshman Eric Toole added an RBI sacrifice fly. Chett Zeise also had an RBI sac fly for the Hawkeyes, while Rumpf added an RBI single in the seventh.
