In an open letter to fans, Hitman developer IO-Interactive said the next iteration of the series for next-gen consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4, along with PC, will feature Agent 47 rumbling about a sandbox, “checkpoint-free” levels, according to a report today from VG 24/7.

In the letter, posted to the Hitman official website, IO specifies that developers have taking to building a “non-linear level design” with the game to ensure it will “play out across huge, checkpoint-free, sandbox levels.”

“Our aim is to create living, breathing and believable levels which will allow gamers to play around with the AI to create those unique moments every fan of the Hitman franchise loves,” the open letter from IO said.

The game will be set in the prime of the “globetrotting” Agent 47’s career, whom IO describes as “the apex predator stalking his prey across the world, with the support of his long-term handler Diana Burnwood and the whole of the ICA.”

According to the letter, IO is creating a game that features the “core Hitman fantasy,” in which gamers will see Agent 47 traveling to “expansive, exotic locations” and taking out a spectrum of targets.

These large locations, IO says, are some of the biggest the developer has created with the Hitman series.

“That means we’re packing in an extreme level of detail on the largest levels we have ever built for a Hitman game,” the open letter from IO said.

IO also announced that the Contracts Mode would make a return, wherein gamers can create challenges that they can then share and challenge friends with.
