An investigation into the case of Tanisha Williams is now complete. In early December of 2011, Williams was arrested for shoplifting at a Cititrends on Freedom Drive in West Charlotte. While in custody, Williams choked herself unconscience and once Police noticed this, immediately called the paramedics for assistance.
The report, which was released Tuesday, revealed the officers were cleared of any wrong doing.
The investigation was initiated from the shoplifting incident in early December by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department's Internal Affairs Division. It has been reported that while handcuffed and sitting in the back of a patrol car, Williams somehow wrapped a seatbelt arounf her neck, choked herself while hitting her head on the window.
For the report, detectives interviewed witnesses and reviewed audio and video evidencefor the case.
Officers claim that after noticing Williams beating her head against the window, they retrieved a restraining device from another patrol car, but by the time they made it back to where she was, she had stopped hitting the window with her haed and the device was no longer needed.
After Williams stopped beating her head on the window, it is reported that officers opened the door at various times to ask if Willaims was ok. She did not respond but is reported to have still been breathing. The report claims the officers did not initially see the harness because of her hair and the lack of light from the night conditions.
Once a flash light was shined on her face, the harness was noticed and immediately cut off and Williams was removed from the car. The report goes on to state that she Williams recieved appropriate medical attention and at this time medics were called.
Williams is still in the hospital on life support and is brain dead.
