Invasion of turkey vultures

Shelby, NC is know as "The City of Pleasant Living." Lately, however, it is reminiscent of a Hitchcock move, "The Birds."

In a report on wcnc.com today, turkey vultures have suddenly taken over the Peach Street neighborhood in Shelby. Sleeping and circling constantly, the prehistoric looking vultures have residents on edge.

The vultures will not chase your family pet, but don't leave that pet food outside! The buzzards are ugly and usually feed on dead animals.

Since the birds are federally protected, don't try to shoot or capture them; it is against the law. If you see a vulture, do not try to scare them away because they will probably vomit which is a defense mechanism.

No one knows when or if these turkey vultures will ever move on. Shelby Police Chief Jeffrey Ledford has no idea why Shelby was the city of choice. As he said, "Great town. Great place and wonderful people. I'm just not sure about the birds."
