It is a catchy name for a band, Snarky Puppy. If you heard the name and didn't associate it with music, you could create your own ideas and stories on just the name alone. As the saying goes, what's in a name? When you get past the name, one quickly discovers that this band is quite good. Snarky Puppy was formed in Denton, Texas back in 2004 as many of the band members were once students at the University of North Texas. The band is mostly an instrumental fusion band. The leader of the group is Grammy Award winning bassist, composer and producer Michael League.
Snarky Puppy is currently based in Brooklyn, New York and features nearly 40 musicians on their recordings and tours. The group along with Lalah Hathaway won a Grammy Award this year in the Best R&B performance category for the song Something. The group's latest album came out in February 2014 and it is titled We Like It Here. This album features a mix of horns, guitars, piano, drums and strings. The group seems to be having fun playing music together and it comes across in their sound as well. The album debuted at number one on the ITunes Jazz charts.
The songs that caught my ear on this project are: Thing of Gold, What About Me?, Young Stuff and Binky which has congas, drums and horns and has an exotic feel to it. The other standout songs are Lingus and Shofukan. Snarky Puppy is currently on tour and they have a couple of dates in the L.A, area on August 4th and 5th at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. This a talented group of musicians and if you get the chance to see them in concert, by all means go see them.
