Rhye is a Los Angeles-based R&B/electronic duo, who dropped their first album Woman back in early 2013. In that same year, they made the list of nominees for the Polaris Music Prize, honouring the best Canadian album based solely an artistic merit. They are slowly gaining momentum and have no plans to slow down any time soon.
Rhye is made up of Toronto native Michael Milosh on vocals, and Danish instrumentalist Robin Hannibal. They first met in Europe, through their mutual label, while Milosh was in Germany, and Hannibal in Denmark. They joined forces and collaborated on a few tracks, and later found each other again in Los Angeles.
Together, they form a unique breed of music, infusing R&B, soul, electronic and sensual sounds. Their album kind of sneaks up on you, first residing in the background, then slowly making its way into your senses, until you feel it all over. Milosh's has an atypical male voice, trading in the rugged, deep tones, for softer more feminine ones. He's reminiscent of Sade, a female singer with a heavier voice.
Rhye stopped in Toronto earlier this summer, and are currently on tour in the U.S. If you ever get a chance to check them out, make it happen; you will not be disappointed. You can find their music on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Soundcloud.
