On Feb. 26, 2014, protest leaders pick candidates for new Ukraine government. Some of you had never heard of the Ukraine until the media headlines on the subject. In previous articles, we have discussed how the Ukraine came to be, the President and today we discuss why the people are protesting.
What is protest? It is the public demonstration of our dislike in numbers. It increases the visibility of the cause, and strengthens the like minded. The cause may vary from government dislike in the Ukraine, to celebrity Bieber prank protests in the U.S.
Young people are likely to have heard of the Bieber prank protest as opposed to the serious protest situation in Ukraine.
"Amid rumors that pop star Justin Bieber was considering a move to Atlanta, the Regular Guys, a morning show on Atlanta radio station Rock 100.5, put together a fake neighborhood group and pulled the wool over the eyes of the world's news organizations."-CNN
"Ukrainians in the capital, Kiev, have taken to the streets recently to protest attempts by Yanukovych's government to limit free speech and ignore calls for government reform. The government passed laws restricting large groups from gathering or wearing helmets in public, blocked a protest march near Parliament last week, and sent warnings to the cellphones of anyone near the protests that they were considered part of a "mass disturbance." The protesters want the president to step down, and have seen a violent police response.-sparknotes
