Now that you have a little more of an introduction to the area, you may be slightly curious to some of the intense media headlines. The previous article describes how Ukraine became what it is today. Let us now learn about the president.

"Viktor Yanukovych is the current president, and was elected in 2010. Previously, he rigged the election for prime minister in 2004 running against Viktor Yushchenko, who he had poisoned. In 2010, Yulia Tymoshenko, the blonde politician with the Heidi braid-headband hairdo, came a close second in the presidential election,* following which members of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc members claimed that there was systematic rigging of the vote (Wiki). Tymoshenko was subsequently sentenced to jail over what many said was a bogus issue with the Russian gas deal. Yanukovych has a reputation for giving friends and family jobs in the government, censoring the press, and trying to remove his political opponents. He is opposed to Ukraine joining NATO."-sparknotes
