The Coast Guard is closing for repairs the I-64 Bridge at mile 7.1, Chesapeake Virginia. For details, see http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2013-08-09/html/2013-19353.htm.
The movable spans need maintenance work, so the bridge will remain shut during weekend hours daytime between Friday, Sept. 13 and Sunday, Sept. 22. The schedule calls for closing the bridge between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., on Friday September 13 through Sunday September 15, 2013; and the same hours again between Friday September 20 and Sunday September 22, 2013. If the repairs can't be completed because of bad weather, the bridge will remain closed again between Friday September 27, and Sunday, September 29.
The bridge will open for boats on the the normal schedule other hours, which includes opening on signal if 24 hours notice is given. No alternate routes are available. The bridge also cannot open for emergencies during repairs.
The Virginia Department of Transportation owns and operates the bridge, which has a vertical clearance of 65 feet above mean high water when closed. Boats that can fit under it are welcome to do so any time but are advised to proceed with caution.
