Interview with writer and author Jane Urquhart

Today, I have the pleasure to interview Jane Urquhart. Born in Little Long Lac, Ontario, she grew up in Toronto, and currently resides in south-western Ontario. She is the author of many internationally acclaimed books, and an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Cendrine Marrouat: Hello Jane, thank you very much for answering my questions. You recently released "Sanctuary Line." What sparked the idea to write this novel?

Jane Urquhart: My interest in monarch butterflies, Mexican labourers in Ontario, and the role of women in Canada’s armed forces.

CM: How has your new novel been received so far?

JU: Wonderfully well. The response has been very gratifying for me.

CM: You have published novels, a short fiction and collections of poetry. In terms of creative process, do you write differently? What genre do you prefer?

JU: I think that in the novel I have found the form in which I am able to incorporate all three genres. This is not to say that I feel it is necessary to do this in a novel, just that I myself love to play in all three schoolyards.

CM: What inspires you to write?

JU: Life, mostly, and the great literature I have been fortunate enough to have the time to read.

CM: Do you have a writing routine or do you let inspiration take a hold of you?

JU: I am afraid I have never been able to stick to a routine and so it follows that I have to let inspiration take hold of me. I have to be very emotionally engaged with what I am writing in order to get on with the hard work of putting the novel through several drafts. Inspiration provides that engagement.

CM: What is next for you?

JU: I will be touring until Christmas with this book. After that I hope to start another novel. I am also working on a collection of poems. A real book of poetry.

CM: Where can people find more about you and purchase your books?

JU: The McClelland and Stewart Website can provide information about me. As for purchasing the books, they are carried by all booksellers, big and small.

CM: Any last words?

JU: “Sanctuary Line” is dedicated to The Fallen. I think it is important to remember them.

Hmmm, I can honestly say I've never heard of this author. But then again, I'm not a well-rounded reader either. What is Sanctuary Line about anyway? It seems like an odd combination of topics thrown into a novel. I suppose this is where creativity comes in?
