Y.G. aka Young Greatness, born Theodore Jones began his rap career ten years ago. With the passing of his father in early 2000 Young Greatness had two important decisions to make, either tackle the life of a street hustler or provide a better life for his family that wouldn’t lead to a life of crime. At point he realized he wanted to become a major Hip-Hop artist. He would spend countless hours writing and rehearsing his raps till the early morning hours to enhance his skills. Many of his peers realized after awhile that the young kid from the St. Bernard Housing Projects had great talent and could possibly make it big. Y.G. is musically influenced by artists like Jay-Z, which helped guide his soul to write from the heart and experience. Read my interview with the rapper below:
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): How would you describe yourself and more importantly your style of music?
Young Greatness: “I would describe myself as an entertainer who’s able to evolve with a hip hop industry that’s constantly changing and growing in new directions. What I mean by that is; I have no particular style that I cater towards. It would be impossible to put Young Greatness in a box and say “He’s this or that”. I’m universal and my various styles of delivery can be seen and felt through my music. That is what makes me unique as an entertainer. That is what defines Greatness.”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): What do you think that you can give to Hip-Hip that others are failing to do?
Young Greatness: “I’m giving hip hop; consistency, by delivering great records, staying ahead of the trends, while staying true to my hip hop uniqueness.”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): In your opinion who is killing the game right now?
Young Greatness: “In my opinion Maybach Music Group is the most captivating music group for the masses right now. But, Future and Kendrick Lamar are the two that are killing the game in terms of record sales at this point in time.”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): Who has influenced your style of music?
Young Greatness: “Coming into the game, the artists that had the most impact on me were Jay Z and Nas. I would actually study their styles of hip hop and was able to create my own. As time went on; it became easier and easier for me to adapt to the constant changes within the hip hop community.”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): What new projects can your fans expect?
Young Greatness: “I have a new mix-tape entitled “Trap Jumpin 2.0” (produced by Niyo of flight School) that should be hitting the streets by the end of March. But, the first single, entitled “Trap Jumpin” is slated for release within the first week of March. Following the mixtape I’ll be releasing an EP entitled “Southern Dreams”(produced by Tafari of the Midiots).”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): What was it like to collaborate with DJ Smallz?
Young Greatness: “Pretty cool, When we first connected, he was adamant about hearing my music first. After listening to my music, he became excited about working on the project.”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): Will you be doing any live shows soon?
Young Greatness: “You will catch me doing a lot of live shows in the upcoming months within the southern region; mainly, the states of Miss, AL, GA, and of course Louisiana. But I do have plans to expand my brand into the Miami, Texas, L.A., Chicago, and NY markets in 2013.”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): When you’re relaxing, what music is on your i-Pod?
Young Greatness: “Well, I am a huge fan of upcoming artists, so, what I am jamming to in my I-pod right now, would have to be Rich Homie Qwan from Atlanta, Ga.”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): Lastly, what are your goals as we are getting deeper into 2013?
Young Greatness: “My goals are to become a dominating hip hop brand, whose music will influence and globally huge impact the music industry, and also to win in life. I don’t want to just work hard on my journey toward my short term goals; I also want to enjoy the journey along the way to the top. One goal that I will not forget for 2013 is to definitely make my city proud to call me a native of New Orleans. You know it!"
As time goes on and the journey expands, Y.G. bolsters his dedication in proving why he's one of the best to come out of the city of New Orleans and no matter what comes your way, with a little perseverance, any goal can be reached. Connect with him here:
