Interview with the owner of Fake Meats

When switching to a vegan diet, substituting your favorite animal products for a meat analogue is sometime the easiest way to go. If you want a one stop shop that carries everything from vegan jerky to vegan eggs, than look no further than Chicago’s own Fake Meats owned by husband and wife Steven and Kim Skaff. Steven took some time out to answer some questions regarding his Chicago Vegan food company Fake Meats.

What made you want to start a vegan food company?

My wife and I are pretty adventurous when it comes to trying new food; when we see vegan food products we haven't heard of we love to give it a try. "Vegan Jerky? What?!" We realized there are tons of "fake meat" products out there that aren't available locally, so we decided to get all of our favorite products together on Fake Meats. With all of these fantastic meat-free jerkies, meat substitutes, egg replacers, and vegan sauces available to everyone online, it's hard for anyone to say "I would go veg*n, but I love xyz too much."

Does Fake Meat really taste like "real" meat?

Some fake meats taste like meat, some are more about texture, and some are just a unique and convenient way to add more protein to a meal. If you do want to add the taste of meat, we sell some fantastic vegan seasonings like "chik-style seasoning," "not-beef bouillon," and "ham flavored seasoning."

What is one misconception regarding vegan foods that the general public has?

A lot of people don't realize that vegan food can be as flavorful and filling as the food they are used to. You can still have your comfort food when you go vegan!

What is the best part about owning a vegan food business in Chicago?

Chicago is diverse community with a lot of forward-thinking and open-minded people. We are bringing new products to the community, and the community introduces new products and opportunities to us every day. We feel like Chicago is the right community for a young progressive business like ours.

Feel free to submit any other comments that you would like people to know about.
