Interview with 'The Host' star Chandler Canterbury (Video)

I recently had the opportunity to interview Chandler Canterbury, who you will be seeing starting today in the newest movie based on a book by the best selling "Twilight" saga author, Stephanie Meyer, "The Host." Chandler is a Houston, TX native, and plays Jaime Stryder, the brother of Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) who has been taken over as a parasitic host for an alien "soul."

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to me Chandler. I know with the movie being released tomorrow, it has to have been a really busy couple of weeks. Since we are both hometown Houtonians, what are some of your favorite places to hang out during your down time?

Chandler Canterbury: Edwards theater to watch movies, the Galleria and there's a park nearby where my friends and I like to go to play football.

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: Edwards is one of my favorites too, not to mention the shopping in the Galleria. What else do you like to do in your downtime?

Chandler Canterbury: Of course there is school and sports, but I also like X-Box 360. Black Ops3 is one of my favorites. I also like to play the guitar and piano.

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: I know that one, and I know more than one teen that has a hard time getting off the X-box too, including my own. Let's talk just a little bit about "The Host." I spoke to some teens that saw it and they loved the way the story evolved and the way the effects were like special effects on the screen, especially the wounds healing.

Chandler Canterbury: Thanks so much!

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: A few of the teens I spoke with said they had read the book, 'The Host" and liked how the story developed along the same lines in the movie. About the book, did you read it?

Chandler Canterbury: No, I didn't.

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: (Laughter) It was a little long wasn't it? I know it scared me a little bit to read it all.

Chandler Canterbury: Yes, it was a little overwhelming when I was reading and learning the script too.

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: Now you have another movie coming out soon "When Angels Sing" with Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Harry Connick Jr. That's quite a cast, and I would expect quite a few discussions about music. Are you musically inclined.

Chandler Canterbury: Working with them and on that movie is actually what got me started playing the guitar and now I'm taking both guitar and piano lessons, but not singing. (laughter)

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: Tell me a little bit about them.

Chandler Canterbury: They are both so real and natural, down to earth. Harry is a great role model.

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: Speaking of other award winning stars you have worked with have you received any good advice from them about your future and your career in acting.

Chandler Canterbury: Some of the best advice I've gotten was from William Hurt and Harry Connick Jr. I've really learned a lot from both of them.

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: Speaking of advice, what advice would you have for teens that are interested in pursuing an acting career?

Chandler Canterbury: Always stay grounded and enjoy everything that comes your way whether it's the chance to go for a opportunity or getting one. Try not to be too invested in it to the exclusion of everything else and just, go for it!

National Teen Celebrity Examiner: So balance is really important. It must be hard to keep that balance between personal and professional life. Speaking of balance now that you have a little down time what's next for you?

Chandler Canterbury: Just enjoying the summer, exploring other opportunities and excited to see what may happen in the future.

Chandler will be seen starring in "Standing Up" (2012) a film centered around two kids at summer camp who are less than popular with their peers. A cruel prank leaves Howie (Canterbury) and Grace stranded on Goat Island and instead of returning to camp they decide to embark on their own adventure. Val Kilmer and Radha Mitchell also star.

In addition to "The Host" Canterbury has also appeared:

  • In a lead role in the indie Plastic Jesus (2012).
  • The dramady, A Bag of Hammers (2011) alongside Jason Ritter, Rebecca Hall, Jake Sandvig, and Carrie Preston.
  • A starring role in Summit's sci-fi thriller Knowing (2009) alongside Nicolas Cage and Rose Byrne.
  • Played a young Brad Pitt in David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
  • a lead role in the psychological thriller After.Life (2009) opposite Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci.
  • Universal's futuristic thriller Repo Men (2010) alongside Jude Law.
  • A special guest lead on the acclaimed FOX series Fringe (2008).
  • In 2008, Chandler won a Young Artist Award for his chilling guest star performance on the CBS hit series "Criminal Minds" (2005).
