When did you discover your passion for health and nutrition?
There was never a defining moment in my life when I realized health and nutrition was my passion. From the day I was born, I've lived a life centered around wholesome food, cooking from scratch, sharing meals with family and fresh, seasonal ingredients. Being Italian, leading a healthy lifestyle was the only thing I knew. The surprise - and subsequent professional opportunities - came when I realized not everyone ate, cooked and lived the way I did!
What do you love most about providing consultation to corporations and their employees?
I enjoy empowering people, inspiring and motivating them. There's an incredible satisfaction which comes from giving people the tools and knowlege they need to live better quality lives.
In your bio it says your a mixologist, what's a beverage that is loved by all your clients? What's your most unique drink?
All my clients love what I've named Oh My Darlin'. It's a skinny cocktail made with Clementine juice, cloves, basil, lime juice, dark rum and triple sec. As you can see, my drink recipes are creative, inspired by places I go, flavors I enjoy and seasonal produce. I think all my cocktails are unique; I don't think I have one that's the most original!
It's been said that a woman's metabolism changes every 10 years, is this true? How can a woman learn to modify her lifestyle as her body changes?
Starting between ages 25 and 30, a woman's metabolism declines between 5% and 10% per decade. What to do to keep it stoked? Here are my top tips:
1) You need to cut calories to lose weight, but it's important not to overdo it. Not eating enough delivers a double whammy to your metabolism; don't go below 1,200 calories per day.
2) Research shows that fiber may rev up your fat burn by as much as 30%. Studies find that women who eat the most fiber gain the least weight over time. Strive to eat 25 g per day.
3) Make sure protein is a component of every meal; your body needs it to maintain lean muscle. Research shows protein can increase post-meal calorie burn by as much as 35%.
4) There's some evidence that calcium deficiency, which is common in many women, may slow metabolism. Enjoy 3 servings of low-fat dairy each day.
5) Incorporate 30 minutes of aerobic activity in your day and adopt weight training 3 times each week. Since muscle tissue burns more calories than fat does, muscle mass is a key factor in weight loss and a consistently high metabolism.
