Q. How did you end up becoming the master of ceremonies for Creation’s Supernatural Las Vegas Convention?
A. That’s a good question and I’m kind of wondering that myself. This hosting is born out of me going out and having a good time. The fact is when I started doing conventions, I was a nervous wreck. It’s a lot of pressure. I’ve been an actor my entire adult life and I’ve never had a fan base. It brought out my shy side. I know it’s hard to believe that I have a shy side, but I do. The karaoke party for example, was born out of this desire to do something fun. I’d love to say that it was for the fans. I decided, and Matt Cohen jumped on board with me, to change it from this static, only a few fans in the auditorium on stage feeling incredibly awkward Friday night event, to where the fans would have more fun. But the truth of the matter is that I changed it so I that would have more fun. I wanted to have a good time, and it snowballed into what is now this fantastic, unbelievable kickoff party that I know from some of the fans, aside from meeting Jared and Jensen, is the pinnacle of the weekend. It goes until the hotel staff drags us kicking and screaming out of the joint. Now how did that parley in to my becoming the master of ceremonies? Honestly because, by proxy, I kind of handed that to Creation that we’re going to do this and that, and when they would see the results that we had more fun than what we had planned. They said go for it. Creation’s Greg, Adam, and Stephanie are the godfathers of this convention. We’ve got Rob Benedict’s band playing. I created a back-up band called The Elastic Waistband. They’re my back-up band for the whole weekend. Creation builds this dynasty and makes it stand out from the other conventions. The more the actors have fun, the more the fans have fun.
Q. Do you have any hidden talents such as writing? Music? I know you can jam on the karaoke stage.
A. Truth is I’m awful at the karaoke. I come out like way down and act like I’m singing back up. I can throw cherry tomatoes up high and catch them in my mouth. I don’t want to brag but I can also do it with cumquats. Cumquats have more bounce, so I’d say I’m better at the tomatoes.
Q. I'm going to end with what's become my signature question. If you were a baseball player, what would your walk up song be? What song pumps you up and inspires you?
A. I know what it is. I want to be intro’d by ‘Dirty White Boy’ by Foreigner.
Be sure not to miss Richard Speight, Jr. in Las Vegas next week at Creation Entertainment's Salute to Supernatural convention March 8-10. Tickets are still available.
