Cendrine Marrouat: I really like your message: “Don’t just speak on life but speak TO life.” Basically, you are challenging us to stop accepting the status quo and start Living?

Terrell K. Mercer: That is a part of it.  I am asking us to stop saying what is wrong and complaining. Be accountable and make a difference in yourself and those around you. Learn to inspire more instead of tearing down. There is so much social irresponsibility going on right now and much of it is done in the name of art and creativity.

CM: What do you prefer: poetry or spoken word? Do you find these two art forms complementary or different?

TKM: My love is dead centered and I can’t choose just one. I think they both complement each other and yet, are different. Poetry to me is that written work where the words are so powerful anyone can pick it up and spread the life in between the lines. Spoken word for me, are those pieces where the passion must be expressed for the fullness of the words to come to life. So like I said I cannot say I choose one or the other.

CM: Who are your major influences? How have they helped shape your career?

TKM: My influences would be more of what than whom. Various events in my life started me writing and life keeps me writing. There have been those that inspire me though and to begin naming I’d miss someone.

CM: As an independent artist, what are the main challenges that you encounter?

TKM: My main challenge is me. At times, I don’t push myself like I should. I have stood behind and pushed others for so long that this kind of seems foreign to do the same for me. I believe in myself and I trust the gift that the Lord has entrusted me with it’s just trying to push ME. I am not seeking fame nor fortune, just to make a positive difference in my words so I have no other challenges than what I create.

CM: What is the daily routine of artist Terrell K. Mercer?

TKM: Prayer in the morning even before my feet hit the floor. Other than annoying my family and harassing people online, in love and going to work. Things change daily. As far as me performing and recording , I fast the day or until after I am done.

CM: What is next for you?

TKM: Next up is the DVD, “The Visual Stimulation.”  It will be made up of live performances, concept videos and discussions on various social issues.  Hoping to stimulate and inspire some after they see with their own eyes the world that is really around us.

CM: Where can people find more information on you and your work?

TKM: My Website can be found here. I can also be found on Facebook (press LIKE please and thank you), MyspaceReverbnation and YouTube.  On Twitter I am @TerrellKMercer.  Don’t feel like putting all that in? Just Google me!

CM: Any last words?

TKM: Yes the internet is NOT the devil.  I have found many great and meaningful friendships via this resource. The Lord has opened doors and avenues for me that I have never imagined. Thank you to those who have written me from all over the world and let me know how my sharing the God in me has touched you. LOVE OUT LOUD.
