Cendrine Marrouat: Finally, you are a freelance writer and editor. Tell us a little more about that.
Dawn Mangham: I’ve been writing practically as long as I have been singing. I love expressing myself with the pen just as much as I do with my voice. I guess freelancing was a natural progression. I write for several independent writing sites like Examiner.com. I am the Atlanta Hip Hop Music Examiner. I recently became a contributor on April Sims’s WAGTi Radio site. I keep my own blogs; I Don’t Know: The Dawn of Confusion and the edgier, more explicit Jokers, Jackrabbits and Bulljunk. I also have my own e-zine called The Dawngeon. My writing is probably the most authentic you will find. I put everything on the page and hope that reading it helps someone out there in some way.
CM: According to you, what role do independent artists and entrepreneurs play in society?
DM: I just realized about two weeks ago what my actual job title is. I am a creativity broker. I help people get their creative entities to the audiences and key players that they need to. As such, we need independent artists to create, to keep making new things, keep coming up with cutting edge ways to use technology and push the envelope. We also need entrepreneurs to do the same. People too often get stuck in tradition. It’s great to honour tradition but to make advances in any arena it takes people who are willing to look at new ways to do things. New business models, new sounds and new ideas are what indie artists and entrepreneurs bring to the table and that’s an exciting thing.
CM: What is next for you?
DM: Wow, there’s so much. In the immediate future making ViM Radio a formidable entity, on and offline. I’m making new music. I am writing. I started school in January so I could finish my Bachelor’s Degree. So I am studying hard to get an A in my accounting class. I’m contemplating curriculum for seminars and brushing up on my networking skills. I’m finally enjoying being multi-faceted. So, what’s next is to continue to build my skills and find opportunities to showcase them; to wake up each morning refreshed and ready to reach someone; to be the absolute best Dawn that I can be.
CM: How can people find more about you?
DM: People can find my show at http://vimradio.com/group/thedawngeon. They can find my articles at http://www.examiner.com/hiphop-music-in-atlanta/dawn-mangham. My blog is located on the web at http://dawntmangham.blogspot.com/. The Dawngeon e-zine is always looking for content and can be found at http://www.openzine.com/TheDawngeon. My musical prowess is on display at Reverbnation. Lastly, I am getting back on my Twitter game so people can follow me.
CM: Is there anything that you would like to add?
DM: I definitely want to thank you for interviewing me, Cendrine. I really appreciate this opportunity. I also want everyone to understand that I am not all about me. I want others to live their dreams. I want people to find that thing that makes them feel like all of the fantasies are coming to life. I just hope that people can be inspired by my story and invigorated by my passion.
End of the interview.
