Something Desirable by Sherlyn Powell
Author Sherlyn Powell has crafted something special with her debut novel, Something Desirable. In Something Desirable Powell tells a love story about a successful woman caught between two very different men. Here, she answers some questions and shares an excerpt from her book:
Richmond Books Examiner: What inspired you to write Something Desirable?
Sherlyn Powell: I’ve always dreamed of being a writer. I started writing about a young woman, Adrienne Baxter and a man, Brian Stevens, then decided to make it more complex by adding another man in the mix and I came up with the title Something Desirable.
RBE: What would you like readers to know about your book?
Powell: Something Desirable is a love story about Adrienne Baxter, a young woman raised with strong family values, taught to stay focused and work hard to reach her goals. She is a brilliant young architect on the fast track to the top of her field. When Adrienne reunites with her college sweetheart Brian Stevens, a successful attorney, she is ready to begin a new chapter in her life. Brian seems to be everything she wants and needs and she convinces herself they are meant to be together. Then Dexter Hughes walks into her life. Dexter was not supposed to happen!
As a strong independent woman, Adrienne becomes uncharacteristically weak and unsure of herself. She can’t help but find herself enjoying the attention of both men.
Adrienne experiences love, excitement and heartbreak on this emotional rollercoaster. Her life changes forever as she faces both personal and professional challenges. Adrienne knows she must make a tough decision to move forward with her life.
RBE: Would you like to share an excerpt?
Powell:
Here’s an excerpt from Something Desirable:
“You always seem deliriously happy when you spend time with Brian.”
“I know Francine. We’ve invested too much time in each other. I don’t want
to lose what we were trying to build.”
“You know Cocoa moved to New York so she could be close to the Modeling
Agency.” Francine told her.
“Yeah, but I know Cocoa wants Brian back and I never trusted her. I can’t
afford to make a mistake and send him back to his ex-girlfriend’s arms.”
“Yeah, but keep seeing Dexter and what do you think will happen?”
“Erica, must you always remind me?”
“I’m just saying.”
“I don’t know. I just mean sometimes I don’t know what’s right for me. One
minute I want to be with Brian and the next minute I’m thinking about Dexter.”
“Are you falling for Dexter now?” Asked Francine.
“I like him. I really do; but I don’t know what’s going on. We live in two different
worlds you know; and I can’t bear the thought of losing Brian.”
“I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes,” said Francine.
“I keep telling her to watch it.”
“Right now I—don’t even want to be in my shoes.” She picked up her drink.
“I mean, look around. There aren’t that many guys out there to choose from. I
set a goal and I graduated from college. I’m successful, aren’t I?”
“Yes,” said Erica.
“Okay so why am I living this drama! I want to be with a man who loves me
and one who wants to grow old with me.” Adrienne sat back in her seat.
“Okay so what’s the problem?” Asked Francine.
“The problem is I can’t have both of them.”
