Interview with Ruth King, teaching the importance of emotional wisdom

Q: What steps led to you teaching emotional wisdom?
A:
Many people struggle with negative emotions. In a climate of fear and uncertainty, we feel we must suppress our anguish, yet to do so is to betray ourselves. This stand-off triggers older wounds, causing physical and emotional disease and taxing our relationships and performance. While there are many opportunities to develop our intellect, there are fewer ways to cultivate the wisdom inherent in emotional distress.

Q: What training/experience do you have?
A:
I have over 20 years experience consulting to organizations on the emotional impact of mergers, acquisitions and severe downsizing. I have a master’s in clinical psychology, taught in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology, and authored Healing Rage—Women Making Inner Peace Possible—an Oprah Magazine Nugget. I’ve studied indigenous cultures in many parts of the world and led diversity awareness tours throughout Africa.

Q: What is emotional wisdom and how can using it help us?
A:
Emotional Wisdom is the unique genius that is revealed when we unite intellect (mind) and intuition (body). Emotional Wisdom is experienced when we:

  • listen to and trust our bodies, discovering our true nature
  • believe in and share our unique talents
  • recognize the sacred in all circumstances
  • connect and contribute to the world

The measure of Emotional Wisdom has to do with how well we consistently manage disturbing emotions. What disturbs us is our teacher, putting us in touch with unfinished business. We will either ignore the call and pass our pain legacy to the next generations, or answer the call cultivating emotional wisdom.

To repeatedly answer the call is to discipline the mind to be free from the grip of negative emotions regardless of the situation. We do this by turning our attention inward to a practice of self-witnessing and self-honoring; non-hatred and non-retaliation. This allows us to naturally open to our genius where creative solutions are revealed.

Q: What sets you apart as a facilitator from others?
A:
I create safe environments where people from all walks of life can show their true colors. Using personal stories, I demonstrate a refined sensitivity and respect for the unique ways that people unfold. I customize my delivery and I am known for creating interactions so that individuals experience and integrate the ideas not just hear them.

Q: Whom do you work with?
A:
I work with individuals, organizations, and groups interested in:

  • Recognizing and utilizing your inner genius
  • Expanding perceptions of right and wrong
  • Understanding yourself in groups
  • Recognizing reality as your creation
  • Becoming more connected to life and purpose
  • Learning how to forgive and let go
  • Living a balanced and creative life
  • Discovering how to rest in body and mind
  • Creating healthy legacies
