On September 6-8, the AVP and IMG hosted the DO AC Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament in Atlantic City for the first time in 16 years, where we were able to catch up with hometown hero Ryan Doherty at the start of the tournament.
Elizabeth Tam (ET): How does it feel to be back in your hometown of New Jersey for the Atlantic City stop of the AVP Tour?
Ryan Doherty (RD): It’s amazing. I’ve done a lot of travelling this year. I’ve been out to three different continents, so it is very exciting to get to sleep in my own bed and see my childhood friends and spend time with my family. This was a tournament I was really looking forward to.
ET: Do you have a lot of people coming out to see you play?
RD: I do. I’ve got quite a bit of family and friends that should be pretty loud and obnoxious, cheering for me at this tournament.
ET: Do you think you will play better now that you are back on home turf?
RD: Absolutely! You know the hometown crowd and I’m actually the only guy who has played in NJ for quite a bit so I’m pretty excited. I think it’s going to be a good tournament for me.
ET: How do you feel being the "hometown hero?"
RD: I love it! Out in California all those guys are the hometown hero and we just played Salt Lake City where my ex-partner was the hometown guy, so it feels good for me to be getting a little press now and then.
ET: You mentioned you played in different continents and different places, where is your favorite place to play?
RD: Gstadd, Switzerland was gorgeous, it was really beautiful. Rome was amazing, they have unbelievable food no matter where you go. But, you can’t beat playing in the USA at places like Manhattan Beach, obviously there’s no place like home, so I’m looking for a great tournament in Atlantic City.
ET: Aside from the support of your family and friends, what is unique about playing here?
RD: The family and friends are going to be great, playing on the Atlantic Ocean—we very rarely get to do that and playing next to two phenomenal casinos—where you can go in afterwards and have some fun with your buddies. It really is a good sports atmosphere, it’s kind of a good fun beach volleyball vibe.
ET: Do you have anything fun planned to do while you are in Atlantic City?
RD: Absolutely! I’m going to go to the casinos as soon as I am done with this interview! I actually just got my check from Salt Lake City, so if I can find a bank to cash it, I might be getting into some trouble!
ET: Anything you want to leave us with?
RD: I’m very excited to be here and I can’t wait for the tournament!
