Interview continuation of Part I: Inspiration and Part II: Designing consumer products
Just this February, you received the Southern Graphics Council Graduate Student Fellowship Award. This exciting honor includes a solo show at the 2011 SGC in St. Louis, $1,000 towards creating a body of work for the show, and presenting at this year's SGC banquet dinner in Philadelphia this month. How did you initially react to the great news and what immediate thoughts do you have on which topics you might cover during your presentation?
Oh, it was ridiculous. I got a little dizzy with excitement when I read the email. I’ve been working in printmaking since I was in high school, but I’m not really a traditional printmaker, especially since I make mostly sculptural printed work, so when I applied I never thought I’d get it. The presentation is silent running, so it’s just going to be 24 slides of my most recent work, with all of the stinkers culled out, of course.
Three of your prints will be exhibited as part of the Tubular! show curated by Doug Harvey at the Pacific Design Center from March 25th to May 5th. Could you please provide a preview to curious and excited minds summarizing what these prints will look like and how they relate to this upcoming exhibit?
Doug Harvey chose the name of the exhibit because it deals with containment, and he thinks all the work he selected relates to that in some way. My pieces are four 3 dimensional series, with two of them more experimental for me. I’ve been thinking about returning to some of my previous work (mostly, the Invisible Coterie series) that I’ve sort of abandoned in a fit of pique for being irritated with its claustrophobic success, in addition to playing around more with sewing and not just with printmaking.
I'm also designing and screenprinting two posters for the exhibit with Harry Diaz. We're selling them for $10 each, but all the proceeds go towards FAR, the graduate student organization putting the exhibit on and responsible for hiring Doug Harvey for the curation. We just got a huge package of black screenprinting paper for the posters, and I'm so excited to play around with it.

First, of all kudos again to the talented writer (L. Cullen) of this article series for landing such a talented multiple award winning artist (in the truest sense of the word) as Camilla Taylor. Next, it would be wrong not to mention that the concept of containment provides a wonderful context within which to view the dynamic tension that the artist beautifully built here and the article brings this out in all it's dimensions. Thirdly, the slideshow rocks!!! Truly inspiring!!! Keep 'em comin'!
I LOVE the slide show. Great pieces! And the article really gets you into the artist's spirit that's in her work.
Very, very cool! Love the art and pics, and also the interview idea for an article. Well done Lauren!!!
Ms. Taylor's work is truly exciting--reading all three parts of the interview really gives us an idea of her breadth of vision--and of her talent! Thanks, Lauren, for giving us this extended view!
