Cendrine Marrouat: What is the daily routine of Violette Clark? And do you like to work in a specific setting?
Violette Clark: I get up and have a coffee….I shuffle to my computer in my jammies and check my e-mails. Then I respond to some of them. Next, I might create a drawing to illustrate a blogpost or if I’m clever I’ll leverage something I am already doing, for example a journal page and finish it up, either photograph or scan it and then post it to my blog. I’ll blog about the process or the inspiration of the piece.
What I do next depends on what’s on my plate. It might be developing new art for an upcoming calendar. It might be developing a new class – online or for a DVD – (right now I’m creating a DVD for a self-esteem book for teens). I might shoot some video while I’m creating step-by-step tutorials. I might also just be shooting a short video for my youtube channel (I have 44 videos – mostly tutorials) or a PDF tutorial. I could also be interviewed for a podcast or blog interview.
If it’s a nice day I might go for a quick walk in the neighbourhood or I might pop over to the gym for an hour and work out. I might even have a teaching gig at a local school or neighbourhood house – it just depends.
I like to mix things up so I don’t get stale or bored. Today, I’ll be brainstorming on a flipchart using visuals and words of what I would like to achieve in the next 6 months. I work in my office (which is super duper colourful) on the computer – when I’m drawing, it’s at the kitchen table. When I’m creating messy mixed media pieces, it’s in my studio in the backyard.
CM: What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?
VC: My advice is to follow your bliss – do whatever gives you juice and makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning. If what gives you juice doesn’t already exist, why not create it yourself? Try not to copy anyone else but be inspired by their work. You are an original with your own spin on things. Put your Inner Quirk to work and create a life that is uniquely YOU!
For example – if you are a mixed media artist but also have a passion for creating fashion, why not create mixed media pieces of fashion inspired art? If you are an artist and also really enjoy sports, you can incorporate sports into your art – maybe create sports inspired shrines?
There are always ways to set yourself apart from everyone else. Also – here’s another piece of advice – JUST DO IT……..don’t wait for things to be perfect or for the timing to be right. Just start where you are and keep moving forward. Don’t let excuses get in the way – you can always find the time for art – even if it’s just 15 minutes. You can’t use the excuse of being too old either – I’m 57! Just go for it! What have you got to lose?
CM: What would you like to achieve through your work?
VC: I would love to inspire as many women and teens as possible to embrace who they are and follow their dreams. I know that using art is the perfect vehicle for doing so!
CM: How can people get in touch with you and purchase your creations?
VC: You can go to my website and blog, watch my YouTube videos and check out my store.
CM: Any last words?
VC: Well I suppose I’ve pretty much said it all – the world needs your Uniqueness – don’t deprive us of what makes you special. Get outside the box, BE YOU, enjoy yourself, find a way to share yourself with the world.
Thank you so much Cendrine for interviewing me! I truly appreciate the opportunity to share with your readers.
End of the interview.
