Our guest today is Mike Hartner, author of the historical romance, I, Walter. His love of all things genealogical led him to writing, and writing has now led him to fiction and a large epic saga. He lives in Vancouver, BC with his wife and son.
Thank you for this interview, Mike. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
During my middle school years I started writing poetry. I put down that quill until I left for university. In 2000, I picked my pen up to write about genealogy. One thing led to another, and I started writing historical fiction.
Can you tell us briefly what your book is about?
The book is about the life story of Walter Crofter, an English boy who grow up at sea.
Why did you choose your particular genre?
The genre chose me. Walter told me his story, and I write it down.
What was your greatest challenge writing this book?
Learning about the reactions of other people.
Are you published by a traditional house, small press or are you self-published?
Was it the right choice for you?
How are you promoting your book thus far?
Book Expo America, American Librarians Association, many state and local book expos as well as Frankfurt and Beijing book fairs.
How is that going for you?
Mixed reaction so far, but Amazon is increasing and audio is now out.
Can you tell us one thing you have done that actually resulted in one or more sales?
Asked for reviewers
Do you have another job besides writing?
I’m a full time father, and take care of scheduling for a busy family.
If you could give one book promotion tip to new authors, what would that be?
Start promoting before the book comes out, and make sure that you leave time for reviews.
What’s next for you?
I, Walter is the first book in a series called The Eternity Series. Books Two and Three are right now trying to decide who should come first.
