I have had the pleasure of knowing Atlanta native Lynorris Evans for several years. Lynorris will appear in Flashdance the Musical at the Fox Theatre, February 5-10. In a recent conversation with Lynorris, we got the chance to catch up on his accomplishments after leaving Georgia.
Examiner: Tell us about yourself and your background.
Evans: I began dancing as a freshman at Tri-Cities High School. I furthered my training at Total Dance/Dancical Productions as well as various summer programs. Eventually I went to Fordham University where I graduated with honors. After graduation, I joined BalletMet, a ballet company in Ohio. I later went on to Santa Fe Opera, Cirque du Soleil Viva Elvis, Broadway's Leap of Faith, and the 1st national tour of Memphis the Musical.
Examiner: When was the first time you discovered the arts?
Evans: In 8th grade Ballethnic Dance Company performed at my middle school. It was the first time I've ever seen black people perform ballet. They inspired me so much to want to dance.
Examiner: When did you discover your passion for theater and dance?
Evans: The first time I discovered my passion for theatre and dance would have to be my junior year of high school. Our drama department was doing a production of The Wiz. I was quite nervous to sing but I auditioned anyway, and ended up landing the part of the scarecrow. It was so much fun, I really enjoyed the combination of singing, acting, and dancing.
Examiner: Have you performed in other productions?
Evans: Yes, I've performed in the Broadway production Leap of Faith, and the 1st national tour of Memphis the Musical.
Examiner: Tell me about a typical day in the life of Lynorris on the road.
Evans: A typical day for me, hmmmm....I generally workout, play my PlayStation 3, find food, and prepare for my show. Depending on the city, I occasionally explore their tourist attractions.
Examiner: Do you have any words for young people who aspire to become a part of the theatre?
Evans: Yes! Follow your heart and never give up.
