The name says it all. Legendary Damon is famous for his amazing parties (especially his notorious birthday celebrations), celebrity clients and party guests (including Kelis, Lil Kim, and Melanie Fiona), and one-of-a-kind style. His "Baby I'm a Star" Wednesday night party at Mister H (69 Crosby St.) is a weekly event known for introducing up-and-coming music acts. Some of the then-unknown artists that have performed there over the past four years are Miguel, Janelle Monáe, and Lady Gaga. I chatted with the legend himself about image vs talent, his upcoming events, and much more! Check out the interview below:
BROWNIE MARIE: You are a big fan of music and obviously know fashion. A lot of people would say that image is more important than talent when it comes to the entertainment industry. What do you think about that?
LEGENDARY DAMON: I think image is very important, and I think talent is also very important. And I think people know the difference. If you like someone, say, like Kim Kardashian... it’s completely image and there’s no talent involved whatsoever. Then there’s somebody like Janelle Monáe who is extremely talented. People know the difference.
Do you ever leave the house in jeans and a t-shirt and some sneakers and call it a day?
Yeah. I dress for the kind of mood I’m in. It’s about me; it’s not about the clothes. I always say: “Don’t let the clothes wear you; you wear the clothes.” If I wear a t-shirt, it’s going to be perceived as equally luxurious as if I wore a suit. I can wear a suit very casually. And I can literally wear an old pair of boots, jeans, a t-shirt, and a hat and get it popping. I pride myself on saying that I can wear literally anything. I’m humbling, thank God, but I can wear pretty much anything.
When are you going to open an online or physical store so we can all be as stylish as you are?
I would have a little invite-only trunk show. It feels like a party to me, people get to [be] very close... it’s very fun. We’ve done that a few times. I love vintage clothes; I think they’re so cool. I do rent my stuff for music videos or for stylists... I do a lot of rentals. I love my stuff so I want to keep a friends and family vibe, at least for now.
Who would you love to style?
You know, Michael Jackson and Madonna or someone like that. A huge superstar.
For some reason I thought you were going to say Princess Kate.
No, no, no. That’s boring. I would do Prince or Madonna.
I’m so intimidated by the “#YoureNotOnTheList” Instagram pictures. How hard is it to get into Mister H “Baby I’m a Star” Wednesdays?
It all depends. “YoureNotOnTheList” is meant to be kind of funny. I do a lot of events, and I would say “You’re on the list” 5,000 times a night. Sometimes it’s a friends and family vibe [at Mr. H]... it depends what we have booked. When there’s something crazy booked, then it’s hard to get in. I do a party that I would want to go to.
Any other projects you’re working on?
I do a huge birthday every year; I don’t know if you know about that.
YASSSS!! I was going to ask about that!
My brain is starting to tick now about it, so that’s in the forefront. I’m doing a holiday party, an annual holiday party that I do every year. I’m going to probably do a New Year’s party as well... which I don’t usually do. So I might do that... I’m not sure yet. What else am I doing? I’m doing Art Basel as well, in Miami. I’m doing a masquerade ball on the 30th [of October]. I don’t celebrate Halloween, but I’m doing a masquerade ball. That’s a lot of stuff, right?
