Iconic punk band, X, has been going strong for the last three decades, and they continue to build on that impact with dynamic performances and the longevity of their music. X originated in LA in 1977 by songwriter and bassist, John Doe, and who he'd later marry, Exene Cervenka, with Billy Zoom on guitar, and D.J. Bonebrake on drums. Together, the band has released thirteen albums, and solo work has been completed by Doe and Cervenka simultaneously. We had the exclusive opportunity to interview John about the band, who has had success as an actor also, performing in such movies as Oliver Stone's Salvador, Jerry Lewis' biopic, Great Balls of Fire, Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, television series Law and Order and Roswell. John had humorous responses to our questions, so if you want a lighthearted read and a good laugh, read on for the interview:
What do you most look forward to while on tour?
John: Riding in the van for hours on end.
What do you think the key to success is among band members lasting, since you guys have been performing together for the last three decades?
John: Job number one is; not dying ! after that determination, needing to make a living and a short memory.
Do you think music has gotten better over the years, still the same, or has gotten worse?
John: As Louis Armstrong said: "There are two kinds of music, good music & bad music." We try to play, listen to & work w/ people who play the first kind.
What has been the best gig, thus far, on this tour?
John: Always the next one but Wash DC had the most of the best elements, sound, audience & performance.
What has it been like performing with Blondie?
John: The crew & band have been kind, generous & downright fun. it's been a total pleasure, plus they play & sound great
What are your top five albums or artists you wouldn't want to live without?
John: At this point that doesn't really apply. Music gives me great pleasure but one can actually live w/out it. yrs truly, JD
