Jason Carbone is the executive producer of Style Network’s hit reality show “Tia & Tamera." It has since become the most watched show in the network’s history with record-breaking numbers. Carbone is a reality TV veteran who founded Good Clean Fun Productions in 2005. He was also the Co-Executive Producer and Director of ABC’s “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” for three years. He has quite an impressive record in reality television. The Lansing TV Examiner had the chance to interview Jason Carbone by email on Aug. 21 to chat about what goes on behind-the-scenes of the show starring those famous twins.
What do you think makes “Tia & Tamera” such a big hit with viewers?
T&T resonates with its audience because they have grown up alongside Tia & Tamera. The ladies have been on TV for over twenty straight years. This is a HUGE rarity in television. When “Sister, Sister” started the girls were eleven and their fans were of a similar age. As the ladies’ careers have blossomed and they have grown up, their audience has grown up along with them. This is a television dynamic few can lay claim to.
How did the concept of the show get started? Were the girls approached about doing reality TV?
The ladies approached the Style Network and then the network reached out to Good Clean Fun. We all hit it off immediately!
Are the twins as much fun to work with, as they appear to be on screen?
That much and more. The ladies are professional, hilarious and a joy to work with.
What have been the craziest moments on set?
I think the craziest moments are the ones that already have huge stakes. Tamera’s wedding leaps to mind. This event was the most important day of Tamera’s life up to that moment. We all wanted it to be perfect for her and sometimes those moments and making a TV show don’t always jibe.
Being a reality TV veteran, how much of the storylines are influenced by producers and how much does reality just come naturally?
I’m proud to say that we have had the good fortune to work with families and individuals whose lives are so rich and full of good stories that we are seldom, if ever at a loss for real life stakes and events.
What can you tell us about any upcoming storylines that may come into play?
We are very fortunate this season to see both sisters at work. We get to see Tia on the set of her new sitcom for NickMom called “Instant Mom” and we see Tamera as she tapes her new talk show “The Real.” Both of these events draw the sisters closer and simultaneously push them apart. It makes for some very compelling drama.
Do you have any upcoming projects on tap that you can tell us about?
This fall we have a new show on CMT with Cassadee Pope that we are very excited about. It follows Cassadee as she records her debut album after “The Voice.” It’s a real follow doc that shows just how much work, dedication and perseverance it takes to achieve your dreams. I’m very excited to share this show with Cassadee’s fans and the CMT audience.
