Cendrine Marrouat: You own an independent label and an Internet radio station/blog. How has your experience as an entrepreneur helped shape your musical career?
Wordsmith: It has given me more of a business mind instead of just being a rapper. I have never been able to just manage my career because when you run a label, you’re dealing with the personalities of many people.
My label is independent, but I have another artist named CuzOH! Black; producers Strada (Montreal, Canada native), Capish, Professa, Street Level; two deejays named DJ Nominal & DJ Big Red1; online promotions via Diallo Kreed; and a webmaster named Nick Dyer.
The only thing I don’t have is the machine behind my label; meaning MONEYYYYYYYYY!

CM: You have performed at major festivals and shows in the Baltimore area. Any favorite moment you would like to share?
Wordsmith: I would say rocking the Verizon stage at the African American Heritage Festival two years ago with Chubb Rock. Though we had our problems; it was dope rocking with someone I grew up listening too.
CM: Any plans to tour Canada?
Wordsmith: I would love to, being that my long-time friend and producer Strada is from Montreal, Canada. I haven’t really had an opportunity to tour in Canada, so maybe an interview like this will put me on the map more of there.
CM: What is your daily creative routine?
Wordsmith: I’ll listen to beats and see what grabs my attention. Once I find one, usually I’ll just record myself saying different rhythms that could fit the hook and once I nail one I start piecing the words together so it makes sense.
I always start with the hook first and do it free hand until I layer it the way I like. When I write my verses that is the first time I actually pick up a pen and paper, as I want my verses to be clear and thought out.
I used to write everything down from hooks, to bridges to verses, but for the past 2 almost 3 years, I make everything up in my head and write my verses later.
CM: What do you want to achieve through your music?
Wordsmith: I believe God gave me a gift of music and in return I want to make it in this industry so I can help others. I want to provide opportunities for artists that are really good, but get overlooked. I want to take my fame and fortune and get more people behind me to use their money for a good cause and travel to Third World countries and let them see I am no bigger than them. When you become an icon I think it’s important to let those who are less fortunate know you’re thinking about them.
CM: What is next for you?
Wordsmith: Hopefully to hit radio in a major way. I have a record called “On My Job” from my “King Noah” project that has some serious radio potential, so I am just waiting on my management to make the move on it.
Radio is the last thing I need in my mind as I feel I’ve done so much on an independent level.
CM: Where can people find more information on you and your music?
Wordsmith: Please feel free to check me out at www.wordsmithmusic.com, www.revoltradio.com, and on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
CM: Any last words?
Wordsmith: Yup, just give me a chance in the music industry and I’ll create a legacy for years to come. Thanks.
End of the interview.
