Espirit De Corps brings their fun, vibrant sound to the Satellite in Silver Lake tonight Monday, Jan. 14. Both Fred Card and Shock Mama Cherry graciously each answered every question in an interview ahead of this show.
W.E. Please share your thoughts and feelings on the meaning of band name and the importance of oneness.
F.C. Life has a lot of unexpected turns. It's just as important to have the creativity to navigate these turns as it is to remember your goals and who you are as a group or person.
S.M.C: The name Esprit De Corps perfectly describes who Fred and I are and how much respect we have for each other. We both play our individual roles in the group which we know are both equally important. When I create the lyrics to Fred's tracks it happens so organically. The birth of our songs represents a unique form of oneness - songs that we're very proud of and know will stand the test of time.
W.E. What fans can expect in upcoming Satellite gig?
F.C. We're going to play a couple songs that we haven't released or played live yet.
S.M.C. Sexy rhythms to move the fans and memorable melodies and lyrics to stick with them beyond the next morning, to have EDC occupy their minds.
W.E. Who are you biggest influences musically?
F.C. For me, it was three tapes that I bought when I was 9 years old: Black Uhuru's "Anthem," Steel Pulse "True Democracy," and Aswad "Live and Direct." I listened to those tapes a million times.
Going to see live music was really inspiring to me as well as a young kid. I learned so much watching musicians like Sly and Robbie, Flabba Holt and Roots Radics, and Soul Syndicate band. If you're into Soul Syndicate and the 70's Greenwich sound, you have to check out a documentary called "Word, Sound, and Power".
Going to see Deftones open up for Bad Brains in 1995 at a small club in San Francisco was also life changing. I got so into the Bad Brains in middle school that I attempted to sing a Bad Brains cover in my 8th grade talent show. Brazilian music was my other biggest influence. There are so many amazing musicians in that country.
