Actor Carl Bauer finds himself in a different world for his role as Rupert the Miner in Syfy Channel’s hot new show Defiance. Known for his roles in Reel Zombies, Anchor Baby and TV shows Suits and Scare Tactics, Bauer started out as an actor and has found a home in science fiction fandom. Set in a devastated future Earth, Defiance is an entertainment experience where the audience can watch the television show and play the video game. This versatile actor tells his fans that this new show will be worth the wait.
Q. April is too long to wait for anxious science fiction fans. Can you give us some juicy tidbits about your hot new show Defiance such as what it has been like on the set?
A. April is a long time away I know. The wait will be worth it. The Defiance set was one of the best, if not the best set experience I have had so far. All of the cast and crew are amazing and fun to work with. It was very much like a big group of friends working together. On breaks we would hang out, tell stories and joke around with each other. There were a few practical jokes and the odd impromptu rap session that would break out, one even included Graham Greene. I think the fans will see that chemistry come through on screen. The entire town of Defiance was created in this lot and to walk down the streets with all of the different aliens, the buildings and the richness of the colors really is quite the experience. I wish I could tell you more.
Q. I understand that your character’s name is Rupert. What is he like; will we love him or love to hate him?
A. My character is Rupert the Miner. Rupert is a lot of fun to play. He is a lovable sort who works hard and plays hard. He is strong and steadfast and has a genuine concern for his fellow miners and townsfolk and will do what he has to do protect them. He might be a little more brave than smart but he is trying to do the right thing. Love him or love to hate him? I go with love him, for now. Hopefully we'll get the chance to explore him further.
Q. Tell your fans about any other projects that are you currently working on?
A. Currently I am working on producing a couple of short films that we are looking to shoot early in the New Year. I'm also developing a couple of scripts.
Q. I understand that you have done many of your own stunts. Did you start out as a stunt man or an actor?
A. I started out as an actor. It's where my real passion is. With my athletic background it was just seamless and natural that I ended up doing my own stunts. I've always been a bit of a thrill seeker.
Q. I see that you are very much in to sports. What sports do you play? What sporting teams do you follow?
A. Growing up in Canada my number one game is hockey. I play two or three times a week during the season, but I'm a multisport guy. I grew up playing all of the major sports, hockey, football, baseball, basketball but I also like to try some other international sports like Team Handball. I still play all the racquet sports, a bit of golf, and I'm a big skier. Actually I’m on my way to the hills today for the Holidays.
Q. I'm going to end with what's become my signature question. If you were a baseball player, what would your walk up song be? What song pumps you up and inspires you?
A. Wow, good question. Pretty much anything by the Rolling Stones and Ravel's Bolero has always got the blood flowing.
