Thank you for this interview, David. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
You are very welcome. I am a Cantor, Voice teacher and vocal coach, and Opera singer by trade. I have been using herbs and diet to help enhance and strengthen my voice for throughout my career. Along the path of singing I studied and became an herbalist and nutritional consultant. This inspired me to begin researching all the herbs, supplements, and diet choices that were the best for a singer and voice professional. The research eventually led to writing my book Superior Vocal Health- A guide to herbs for the Voice and Throat.
Can you tell us briefly what your book is about?
Superior Vocal Health is a comprehensive researched guide to herbs, supplements and diet for the voice. I like to think of it as the one stop shop for solutions on how to care for your voice naturally without drugs or chemicals. It contains a comprehensive list of Herbs A-Z for the throat, chest, sinuses, vocal mechanism, and mind, specific original formulas for every vocal ailment from a sore throat to clogged sinuses and performance anxiety, supplements lists that enhance the voice and diet choices that are the best for the voice. It also has a “What to do when “ section giving natural solutions for immediate issues that arise.
Who is your intended audience? Have you been able to crossover into other audiences as well?
My intended audience is anyone who uses their voice to make a living, or relies on their voice. That is almost everyone on the planet if you think about it!
Why did you choose your particular genre?
I chose this genre because it is my specialty and I have been a singer my entire life. Health and wellness are also my focus in life and combining the two seemed to be the natural and organic next step for me.
Do you ever experience self-doubts with your work?
Who doesn’t, right! Throughout the writing process I had to keep reminding myself why I was writing this book; To help all voice professionals care for and maintain a healthy voice. When I came back to this intention and kept things clear in my head, the writing flowed and the self-doubt subsided.
Where do you write? Do you have a favorite place?
Actually I do have a favorite place. My living room, (when empty and rid of kids) is a wonderfully open, and airy space. It is bright with vaulted ceilings. When I set up on my comfortable couch with a pillow behind my back for support, and classical music on, I feel like I am in another world. It’s only me, my research and a nice cup of green tea!
What kind of research did you have to do during the writing process?
Essentially I had to research every herb that was applicable to help the vocal mechanism. That included the chest as well. Then I needed to do the same with diet and supplements. So the research was rather intensive and needed to be double checked often. There is a lot of information out there on this subject. I wanted to make sure I had the best sources and most reliable information I could find.
Who is your publisher and how did you get accepted by them? Did you pitch your book yourself or go through an agent?
My publisher is Vendera Publishing owned by Jaime Vendera. Jaime is a great guy, a great singer, and has published six or seven vocal books under his publishing house already. Because of this, I felt comfortable and secure that I could rely on him to represent the book in the best way possible. He knows the audience and also was very excited that someone was finally putting together a book of this sort for singers. He also loves my products and herbal formulas from my company of the same name- Superior Vocal Health.
How are you promoting your book thus far?
We promote the book through all of the various social media platforms as well as at music conventions, singing and teaching websites, vocal studios, and more.
If you could give one book promotion tip to new authors, what would that be?
The tip would be to not stop, EVER! Persistence and consistency are the key to any and every success. Even more so with book promotion.
What’s next for you?
I am currently working on Superior Vocal Health-2. This will be an even more in depth book with new chapters for acid reflux, hydration, guest writers and more!
Thank you for this interview, David. Can you tell us where we can find you on the web?
