Interview with country musicians Robyn & Ryleigh

Robyn and Ryleigh are an original country music sister duo from Langley, British Columbia. They are currently working on releasing their second CD (and first full album) and collaborating with filmmaker Scarlett Bruns writing original music for the feature film "Heart of Dance."

Cendrine Marrouat: Hello, Robyn and Ryleigh, thank you for answering my questions. When did you realize that you wanted to sing together? Have you received any formal training?

Robyn: We actually knew pretty young that we liked to sing and entertain.  I learned to play ukulele in school when I was 8 years old. When I was 13 I taught myself to play guitar. I started writing songs about that time too.

Ryleigh soon started singing along and just so naturally, harmonized  -  I think so she could hear her own voice and not get drowned out in the song...she had to be different haha but it turned out perfect for us and being sisters, we have the same tones in our voices so I think the sound seems more natural too.

No real “formal” training actually....more like “On the job training” for us.

CM: You are ready to release your first EP.  Would you tell us more about it?

Robyn and Ryleigh: It’s been about a year since we recorded a 5-song EP entitled “Love Always” with original songs that we are pretty proud of.  We are back in the studio this month (January) to complete a full album – so excited about that!

CM: You are currently working on “Heart of Dance,” a movie that raises awareness of eating disorders.  How did you hear of the project? And why did you decide to take part in it?

Ryleigh: I actually auditioned for a lead role in the film but I was unavailable for “callbacks” and they found amazing actors to fill the roles! Scarlett Bruns actually took note of our website and discovered our music. Fortunately she really liked what she heard and asked if we could do some writing for the soundtrack. She also offered us a “cameo” in the movie....yayy! It’s a really great story with a really great message....and with a little bit of “love” thrown in.... it’s going to be an amazing movie that we are proud to be a part of!

CM: What is it like to work together as sisters? Is there any friendly rivalry between you?

Robyn: We’re pretty much like, I’m sure, all sisters.  We argue and fight occasionally but for the most part we get along. I mean, we live together, sing and share the stage together and we really hope to make a long career in music together. We’re pretty much stuck with one another ha ha. I can’t think of anyone else I’d rather be stuck with ...........well maybe Justin Bieber but...haha that’s not very likely!

CM: What is your daily routine?

Ryleigh: Robyn and I both have jobs, we have to, there’s not much money in this at this stage of the game. We would love nothing more than to do this full time, that would be our dream!

I will be graduating high school this year.  I think I will be relieved to have much more time to devote to our music.

CM: How is the music scene in British Columbia? Any favourite memory you would like to share?

R&R: Vancouver has many musical “likes” but really we think country music is becoming more and more popular all the time. Many times we’ve heard people say that they have “gone country” and are listening to country radio stations more now than ever. As far as the entire province...well, we haven’t gone too far yet out of Vancouver....I’m sure we’ll find out soon if country is where it’s at.

CM: Any Canadian tour planned?

Ryleigh: We hope to start touring this summer to promote our CD. At the moment we have applied for possible touring grants that would really be so helpful in getting us out there travelling across the country.

CM: Where do you see yourself in five years?

Robyn: We want to just keep moving forward, whatever that might bring. Over the next few years we plan to keep on singing whenever, wherever we can and hopefully gain some fans along the way.  As long as there’s people who want to listen to our music we’ll be there to give it to them....cause that’s what we love.

We are very excited to say that we were just sponsored by Dorinha Jeans! Our favourite!

CM: Where can people find more information on you and your music?

R&R: Please check out our website. We would love to hear any feedback.  The songs from our EP are available on this site and on iTunes. Our new ones will be available soon.

You can also connect with us on our Facebook Page as well as on Twitter

CM: Any last words?

R&R: Thanks everybody .... all the best in 2012!  Love, Always
