Katy, Texas is home to Brian Haynes, who is an author, a minister, and a speaker at the upcoming D6 Conference taking place in two weeks (September 23-25) at the Frisco Convention Center. Haynes is the brains behind the Legacy Milestones strategy--a plan to connect church and home with the purpose to equip future generations for the Christian walk. Haynes is also the author of the new book, Shift: What It Takes to Finally Reach Families Today. He graduated from Baylor University, Southwestern Seminary, and Liberty Theological Seminary, where he earned a doctorate of ministry for his work in discipleship and family ministry.
EY: Why are you part of the D6 Conference?
BH: I believe it's time for the Church to make a shift in its thinking. We need to work hard to build a bridge between Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and Matthew 28:18-20 in our practice. That is what the D6 Conference is all about. I pray my work at the conference will help other church leaders build common paths between church and home.
EY: How do you think the D6 Conference will impact the Church?
BH: I think the D6 Conference is a huge part of what God is doing in the hearts of church leaders across the country. There is a clearly renewed interest within the local church to equip and empower the family to take the lead in the spiritual formation process for the next generation. D6 will motivate, but maybe more important, give the Church a viable solution for just exactly how to equip the family and partner with them.
EY: What's your "day job"?
BH: Besides husband and daddy, I serve as associate pastor overseeing spiritual formation at Kingsland Baptist Church in Katy, Texas. My job is to partner the church and family to equip the generations one home at a time.
EY: What is your new book all about?
BH: For too long the Church has unintentionally communicated that discipleship takes place in and through the church [building] on one day of the week. The Bible speaks of a spiritual formation process that is for everyday and is a partnership between home and church. Shift: What It Takes to Finally Reach Families Today is designed to help the Church body make a shift in her thinking and practice to embrace and equip the family for discipleship. The book lays out a clear and tried strategic plan called the path of Legacy Milestones. We have been working this plan at my church for several years and found great value in the strategy. Many churches are asking the question, "How do we motivate, equip, and partner with the family?" The book presents a clear answer to that question.
EY: What do you enjoy in your spare time?
BH: I love hanging out with my wife wherever she wants to hang. I enjoy coaching my daughters' soccer teams, hiking, and I am an archeology enthusiast.
EY: What is your favorite aspect of Texas?
BH: The big sky and beautiful sunsets; plus, we have family and great friends in Texas.
