Cendrine Marrouat: Despite being a very young band, you have left your mark locally through performances and networking. Any favourite anecdote?
Gabriel Savage: Just Keep on keepin' on! That's pretty much our mentality in a nutshell. We've been busy playing gigs, networking with other bands, doing publicity stunts on the streets (like setting up with generator on Granville and playing a 40-minute set to whatever crowd ends up forming!), and doing whatever we can to build a fanbase.
At this point, our goal is to play as much as possible, get as many people digging the music as we can, so that when the album is ready we have people who are interested in hearing it.
CM: As an independent band, what are the main challenges that you encounter?
GS: Everyday is faced with a new obstacle that we must try and overcome. Despite popular belief, this business isn’t easy, especially today; there is a lot of competition in the city and it really does end up coming down to who it is you know, and who owes you a favour.
Our first gig was at a crummy-sleazy bar on Hastings in East Van (won't name any names!), where we played for a bunch of sloshed regulars and some of our loyal friends that came out to support us. The night was an embarrassment to be honest. Bad sound, bad service, the whole shebang. But, it served us as our first gig, which was something to put on the resume so we could go ahead and get some more (laughs).
CM: What do you want to achieve through your music?
Ryley Kirkpatrick: We want the audience to have as much fun as we do. We're a bar band, so really the only way we're going to be able to get off is if we see that audience is getting off. It's the best sexual encounter to be found in a bar! (laughs)
CM: What is next for you?
GS: After the album is done, we’d like to get a Canadian tour in the books for next summer, as well as do what we can to get a video in the works for one of our singles. We've also got a few LA bookings up for grabs through our friends from California, The Nukes, who we got a show for here in Vancouver during their West Coast tour. A little bit of 'you scratch my back, I scratch yours' kind of thing (laughs).
So, a West Coast tour may be in the works as well, but right now, we're just taking things one step at a time. Once the album is finished, we'll know the next step.
CM: Where can people find more information about the band?
RK: We can be found anywhere from Facebook to our official website where we've got regular blog posts, updates and anything else worth mentioning and reading. But, if you're local, we suggest coming out to a show to get the full experience.
CM: Any last words?
GS: Yes. But, this is still only the beginning, so I think I'll save them until the end of it all, when people are really listening...
