Today, prior to Wednesday’s premiere episode of “Spice of Life with Bal Arneson,” this Examiner had the pleasure of speaking with Cooking Channel chef, Bal Arneson. Bal’s new show airs on Cooking Channel on Wednesday evenings. Check your local listings.

Thanks so much for speaking with me today, Bal and congratulations on your new show! Are you home in Vancouver, one of my favorite cities?

Bal: Yes, I’m home, actually the show is filmed here. I love Vancouver; I can drive past mountains during the morning and then sail on the ocean in the afternoon. It is truly one awesome city.

I spent a day there several years ago, and I just was amazed at how awesome it is. I am anxious to see your new show “Spice of Life with Bal Arneson,” and write the recaps for them on However, I confess, I am not a person who is too familiar with spices.

Bal: Hopefully, I can teach you not to be afraid of them. Most people relate spices to heat, but there are so many different flavors and aromas. Coriander produces citrus flavor, and cumin is earthy and warm. Many spices can create flavors that you will love.

I am willing to learn and look forward to an education. It sounds like an interesting show, can you share the concept with viewers and those who may not be familiar with you.

Bal: I’m a single mother, and it is just me with my family. Creating recipes for breakfasts, lunches, with all kinds of meats and using spices to create delicious recipes.

How old are your children?

Bal: My daughter Anoop is 20, and my son Aaron is 10. My daughter and I are very close and have been mistaken for sisters; my son is the man of the house.

I want to tell you that I read your biography, and you certainly accomplished so much in your life. You are an inspiration to women around the world.

Bal: Women are amazing, regardless of their age, size, ethnicity, background; they should go for it. We try to show this resolve in the show; women do what they have to do, multi-tasking is our life. I want the show to give a feeling that if Bal can do it; anyone can do it. Women are capable of raising kids, doing chores, gardening, working for a living and anything else that must be done. I even changed a flat tire last week, did not think of calling for help.

Is there anything you would like to share with your viewers before the start of the show?

Bal: The show is spice flavorful; I want to demystify spices for those who are afraid of them. Sit back and enjoy and have fun. They will see the connection between me and my daughter; I had her at a young age, and we get along so well. The family values and the sibling rivalry between my son and daughter, even though there is such an age difference. Each episode begins with breakfast with the kids.

Thanks again, Bal, and I will send you the links on Twitter, when I write about the shows. Happy New Year!

Bal: Happy New Year to you too!
