Cendrine Marrouat: Why did you choose the self-publishing path?
Kimberley Johnson: We decided self-publishing was the way to go because we could keep control. Ralph Faust formatted "The Virgin Diaries" and designed the cover as well. The three of us created a book that we wanted, not what a publisher wanted us to do with it.
As any author will agree, finding an agent or a publisher to take you on when you are not already established is almost a miracle. When we decided to self publish, it was at the very beginning of this new wave. Authors now have the power to create their material at a minimal cost and be able to share it online. With social media to market the work, it was a no-brainer.
CM: How have you used social media to reach potential readers? And how have Canadians reacted to your books, so far?
KJ: We both utilize Facebook, Twitter and Blogs that review books. It is a way to reach many different people from all over the world. We have also created videos on Youtube.
We have met a few Canadians via Facebook who have read our work. The feedback has been favorable.
The topics we cover are universal. No matter what country you live in, these experiences affect us all and it is a way to understand that we share a common thread and we are all connected.
CM: Are you working on a specific project right now?
KJ: As mentioned, Ann is releasing her fiction titled "Dreams and Nightmares," which is a thriller. Watch for it!
We are also in the process of collecting stories for The Body and Self Image Blog. Eventually we will turn it into a book. The focus is not just on women and eating disorders. We accept anonymous and credited stories from everyday men and women of all ages and ethnic backgrounds as well as professionals who have something interesting and meaningful to contribute.
People are interesting. We can learn from each other. The stories and articles we have so far are varied. The most popular post to date is titled "Tattoos Make Me Feel Beautiful and Unique." That story is about positive body image.
CM: How can people get in touch with you and where can they purchase the books?
KJ: All our information (videos, reviews and excerpts) can be found on our site (www.arkstories.com), including the blog. Our works are available online, Amazon.com and other online booksellers.
CM: Any last words?
KJ: Since its launch on June 10, 2011, The Body and Self Image Blog has hit the ground running. The stories are varied and are pouring in. If you would like to read the content and see how you might contribute anonymously or as a credited guest, please visit www.bodyandselfimage.com. What's your story?
