Interview: The Staves talk about new album 'Dead & Born & Grown'

On March 5, The Staves chatted about their newest studio album “Dead & Born & Grown.” The acoustic rock trio of sisters is made up of Emily Staveley-Taylor, Jessica Staveley-Taylor and Camilla Staveley-Taylor.

“It is a collection of the best songs we’ve written since we started as a band. We wanted to include some of the oldest and the very newest material and everything in between. There were several songs that didn’t make the grade and some that we felt would do the same job as others on the album, so they were left out.”

They noted that the biggest struggle was to get the track order right for their CD. “It’s a much harder task than you would think,” they said.

When asked what their personal favorite songs are off the album, Emily selected “Snow,” meanwhile Camilla picked “Eagle Song” and Jess claimed “Pay Us No Mind” as her favorite.

They worked on this project with Glyn and Ethan Johns as their producers and they had nothing but great things to say about them. “They are both experts at working with tape and recording things live, which was exactly how we wanted to record the album, so it was a good match. They have both produced albums that we listened to when we were growing up, from The Eagles and the Stones to Ryan Adams and Ben Kweller,” they said.

The Staves have shared the stage with such acclaimed musical acts as Bon Iver and The Civil Wars and they dubbed that as an “amazing experience.” “Both tours were fantastic opportunities for us. Watching Bon Iver play every night was the best thing ever, and they might just be the nicest people we've met,” they admitted.

The girls noted they will be touring a great deal this year and they are foreshadowing that their tour may include stops in New York City. “We had such a blast when we played the Mercury Lounge last year, but we also have a lot of writing time booked in this year. Traveling is so inspiring, we really need the time to put all our experiences on the road into new songs.”
