We recently got a chance to catch up with rising star and teen heart throb, Chris Landry to talk music, his new deal, working with Singer and Songwriter, Bobby V, upcoming projects and more...
Check out our exclusive one on one with the Blu Kolla Dreams star below:
RW: Again, thank you for this opportunity. We've been following your career for a minute, but for those who aren’t familiar with who you are… Who is Chris Landry?
CL: Chris Landry is just a kid with a dream and I’m excited about getting signed, following my dreams and being able to do what it is I love to do.
RW: You recently turned 18, so you started pretty young. At what age did you discover your talent?
CL: Around the age of 6. I use to listen to Romeo and Bow Wow and wanted to be like them. I would recite their lyrics and then I started to write my own (at school)
RW: So, would you say it came natural?
CL: Yes, pretty much!
RW: Is music your first love?
CL: No, actually it wasn’t. My first love was Baseball, basketball and football.
RW: So, Sports was your first?
CL: Yes, sports was actually my first love.
RW: Cool, cool and your sound…How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
CL: My music is really diverse, it’s a mixture… I’m from Texas, so I keep that Texas vibe, but would probably sound like a East Coast rapper to someone who has never heard my music.
RW: Who are some of your musical influences?
CL: Man, it goes from Jay-Z, Drake, Kanye…The College Dropout Kanye, Big Sean, J. Cole and the list goes on – I listen to everybody.
RW: You in someway are connected to Atlanta Singer/Songwriter, Bobby V. Can you tell us a little more about that?
CL: Yeah, I’m actually signed to his label, “Blu Kolla Dreams”…That’s family, big bro!
RW: That’s what’s up, congrats on the deal and being able to actually see your dreams come true. I know it changes a lot… But how has MUSIC changed your life?
CL: Man, it has me focused on being successful now. When I was younger, I grew up in the hood so there was a lot of violence and drug activity and I always thought I was going to get caught up in that kind of stuff and started doing music, got signed and changed my life around. I use to have an attitude problem and get into trouble at school, now I just smile at everything because I’m happy to be doing something that I love.
RW: Man, that’s dope! And with that; I know some of that has to be an inspiration when writing…Can you tell us who or what inspires you when writing?
CL: The hood – I go back and stay nights at my family’s house and take in everything that surrounds me…I also watch the news and stay updated and the girls, gotta keep them pleased!
RW: (laughs) Have you ever doubted yourself or your career?
CL: Of course, it’s been times where I became real, real stressed because things weren’t moving the way that I wanted them to move, but people around me…They just keep me motivated and keep me going!
RW: So far, what would you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?
CL: My biggest accomplishment… It would have to be actually having a fan base and then another – I did a show in New York earlier this year and it was a great turnout, I got a great response. They say New York is the make or break you city…If they rock with you in New York, they’ll rock with you any and everywhere.
RW: That’s big and you’re right, New York is a very tough crowd to please — Other than music, is there anything else you would like to do or is interested in?
CL: One day, I plan to run my own businesses…Haven’t really thought about it like that because right now my main focus is on music, but I also thought about going to college and getting back into sports.
RW: You’re still young, so you still have all of those choices…Take full advantage of it!
RW: If we were to go through your iPod or music player, who are some artist that we would find? Who are you listening to?
CL: You gon’ find some Drake, Jay-Z, Chris Brown, Big Sean, Kanye and the list goes on…I tell this to everyone!
RW: (laughs) Sounds like my playlist.
CL: Yeah man, I listen to everything!
RW: Any upcoming projects or events?
CL: I plan to drop a single soon…Real, real soon so stay tuned for that. I’m working on two mixtapes right now. One will drop this year and is going to be me going in on other peoples beats and the other, it’s like all originals. After that, I plan to drop an EP and I’m also working on this TV show I’m going to be on…Can’t give too much on that, but definitely trying to get into acting.
RW: That’s what up, I can’t see that… So what can your fans expect from Chris Landry in 2013?
CL: You can expect me to be on the road more. You can expect the acting to be up and running, the mixtapes, EP… Expect me to be everywhere, I’m trying to make it and take it international!
RW: What is the best advice you’ve been given?
CL: “You can do anything you want to do, so stay focused and put your mind to it and grind to it and you can do it!”
RW: What type of advice would you give someone your age who’s interested in pursuing a career in music?
CL: Man, just keep grinding and don’t let nobody tell you you can’t because you can…Just keep God first and stay focused!
RW: Any shoutouts?
CL: Shoutout first to God, my manager (Brandon), my mom and brothers…Also my mom’s boyfriend, he’s been real supportive of me..My family and everyone who supports me and has been since day one!
