On Aug. 25, 2013, Sean Connery lookalike John Allen reminded Examiner.com that Sir Sean celebrated his birthday. He is 83 today. Allen, who resides in DelRay Beach, Fla., also offered to do an interview about some of his experiences "as OO7, Bond or Connery" as well as meeting and working with the man!
Some of Allen's background includes working with Howard Keel of Broadway fame, film actor Gene Wilder, Arlene Francis from television, in addition to many others.
Allen gave it all up only to return to it later in life as a celebrity lookalike, to that of Sean Connery's original James Bond OO7. In addition to working alone on gigs or with other OO7 lookalikes (Glenn Reichle as Pierce Brosnan, James Taggart, Max Ryder and Russell Kozlosky as Daniel Craig... ) Allen has also worked alongside the man himself, Sean Connery! (see video)
"As I headed towards the Bahamas after being thrilled to be chosen to work with Sean Connery as his stand-in double, my actor insecurity quickly went away.
For, while on my way to the shoot, I walked through Bahama's airport and received waves from large-sized men making their way to me in a hurry. Although when the men got closer they quickly stopped. Turned out they were the security men for the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, and they thought I was Sean Connery!"
That must happen to you all the time, but what happened in this case?
"I explained that I was not Connery, and that I was there on location to shoot a commercial with him though. The Prime Minister said 'Wow! you really look just like him!'
Then when I was leaving the airport a cab full of people stopped near me insisting I get in. One of the men wanted me to go meet his friend's bar that was featured in the film 'Thunderball' back in the 60s. I went with them and had fun!
Sounds like you had a great time even before you shot the commercial with Sean Connery. What was that experience like?
"When I began to shoot with Sean and first meet him, he graciously greeted me with 'Hello John you look wonderful today.' I responded with 'Of course I do, I look like you!'
From that greeting and comment there was a lot of laughter from everyone on set."
Considering you were working, it sounds like you were having a blast!
"Yes, everyday after shooting I would return to our hotel The British Colonial, and as soon as the crew bus pulled up I would be mobbed by fans wanting a photo. The hotel appreciated my patience and put a bottle of wine and a fruit basket in my room thanking me for being so nice to their guests."
John Allen was represented, on that gig, by talent agent Paul Levine.
"Paul Levine from the Famous Faces Agency booked me. Too, he always gets us entrance to any new Bond movie through his press contacts. His contact number is (954) 321-8883, and he can be found on Facebook."
Thank you John Allen for taking the time to share with us, and happy birthday to Sean Connery as well!
Do you have any gigs coming up in the near future?
"Yes, I have two James Bond gigs in September. One will be in Las Vegas at The Venetian Resort, and then from there I go onto San Diego for a Heart Foundation fundraising event."
